"simple statistics problems"

I think God would have been in a really bad mood decided to come up with something called algebra to trouble us! I’ve spent hours working on this algebra problem which relates to "simple statistics problems" and I still can’t solve it. I’m particularly having problems with roots, slope and function definition. Can anyone show me the way on how to go about solving such problems? I’ve tried various means that I could think of, but none helped. I need some urgent guidance now. Anybody?

Although I understand what your problem is, but if you could explain in greater detail the areas in which you are facing difficulty, then I might be in a better position to guide you.
